The Maricopa County County Sheriff's Office confirmed that three people were killed and a fourth injured in Fountain Hills late Tuesday morning.
MCSO identified the driver as 27-year-old Alex Bashaw on Tuesday night.
The group was walking on the sidewalk in the area of Saguaro and Palisades boulevards, right by Fountain Park, which is home to the town's iconic fountain.
Deputies said Bashaw was driving an SUV when he jumped the curb and hit the people. That car was heading north on Saguaro toward Palisades.
Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. The third person died at the hospital.
The fourth person was taken to the hospital and rushed into surgery. His or her prognosis was not immediately available.
Police believe distracted driving might have been a factor in the crash.
Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with deputies.
"The driver was tested for impairment by a drug recognition expert on scene and the driver showed no signs of impairment," Enriquez said.
He also explained that speed does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
Investigators have not identified the victims.
Enriquez said charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
Foutain Hills is about 32 minutes northeast of Phoenix via Loop 202 and State Route 87.
