The westbound stretch of US 60 (Superstition Freeway) in Tempe will be closed this weekend (July 13-16) as part of an ongoing safety project designed to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes between Rural Road and the Interstate 10 interchange, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The weekend closure will allow crews to adjust lane locations and install new signs along the westbound freeway. Those changes will allow a second westbound left lane to connect with the US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10 (toward Tucson). The goal is to improve the flow of traffic in the left lanes and reduce the risk of often minor rear-end collisions.

Westbound US 60 will be closed between Loop 101 and I-10 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (July 16) for lane-striping, sign changes and other improvement work. The westbound US 60 on-ramp at Dobson Road will be closed. The eastbound I-10 left two lanes between Broadway Road and US 60, eastbound off-ramp at Baseline Road and eastbound HOV-lane ramp between I-10 and eastbound US 60 also will be closed.

Drivers should consider alternate routes while westbound US 60 is closed. Westbound US 60 ramps to Loop 101 will be open, allowing drivers to travel north to the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway or south to the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway. The westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway serves as a route to the downtown Phoenix area or Sky Harbor International Airport.

The westbound US 60 lane-assignment changes provide for a second lane on the ramp to eastbound I-10. These safety measures follow other steps ADOT has worked on with the city of Tempe and Arizona Department of Public Safety. In 2016, ADOT installed a line of lane-delineator posts next to the HOV lane approaching I-10 to discourage sudden lane changes. The westbound I-10 on-ramp at Mill Avenue also was closed for a weekend last November for a safety evaluation.

Driver behavior remains the primary factor in reducing crashes. Drivers should always remain alert to changing traffic conditions, avoid distractions and pay attention to signs and other traffic control devices.
